Phoebe came in to get coffee before Cam's class and smiled a little when she saw Cole. "Hey."

"You came out of your room," Cole remarked with a raised eyebrow. "What was that stuff about a doppleganger?"

Phoebe groans. "I was at Carita's last night... and I was uhmm... anyway, you were there...only it wasn't you and... yeah..."

Cole blinked. "Wasn't me, that's for sure. Did he try to hurt you?"

Phoebe shook her head. "I don't think hurting me was what he had in mind," Phoebe blushed a bright red. "Paige and I both thought it was you and he really wanted to go back to my place... which is confusing..."

"How could he resist you?" Cole joked, trying to resist his natural urge to want to hunt down the man and kick his ass. But he couldn't shake his unease at having someone who looked like him running around. "There are demons who can shapeshift to look like other people," he said. "Be careful if you see him again. Is there any way you can tell us apart? Maybe have a codeword or something?"

"I'm wondering if that's the demon who tried to cause me to kill myself that Saturday night," she mused. She raised an eyebrow. "Codeword?"

"That's what I'm afraid of," Cole said grimly. In answer to Phoebe's question, he went on, "Yeah, a code word. Like the safe word we had for Ethics last semester. Some random password we can use so you know it's really me and not this doppelganger."

"So, something that only you would know..."

"Just a random word," Cole said. He dropped his voice for Phoebe's ears alone. "You say 'What's the password?' and I say 'rutabaga.'"

"I'll never remember that you're supposed to say Rutabaga... " she admitted. "Uhmm... how about 'Ethics'?" she asked in a soft whisper.

Cole nodded. "That works. ~~Because that's a word Christian Troy has problems with.~~. 'Ethics' it is."

"So, if he doesn't say 'Ethics' I know that it's a demon I need to get the hell away from."

"Just be careful," Cole said. "I mean, it could be a coincidence -- I mean, look at all the people who look similar around here -- but then again, he could be a demon."

"Then again, from what I understand, the other dopples around here haven't tried to kill anyone. I take this one kind of personal." ~~He doesn't kiss like you, anyway.~~

"Yeah, if he's the same one who did that, I'll deal with him," Cole promised. He reached out his arms toward Phoebe.

Phoebe looked torn for a moment and then she moved to hug him. Someone was trying to hurt her and Cole was wanting to help. She was silent for a moment. "I need to warn Kiki and lana about this, and let Kiki know that Crowley really doesn't want us to try to open..."

Remembering Lana's words about Phoebe and Kiki being up to something, Cole leaned his head back and looked down and asked, "Try to open what?"

Damn it. "Don't worry, Crowley already forbid us from doing it," she said sourly. "Kiki and I were going to try to open a bridge toanother realm to figure out why she and I were attacked and why we seem to attract the interest of things like that?"

For once he agreed with Crowley. "Phoebe, don't do things like that without talking to me first," he insisted. "You're my girlfriend and I don't want you hiding stuff like that from me."

Uh oh.

She placed a hand on his chest and pulled back to look at him.

"Cole... I thought we agreed that we had some things we needed to work on before we could be back together?"

He frowned. "I thought the other night meant that we were back, we just had to work stuff out, too?"

Okay, now she had tears in her eyes. He didn't get it.

"Cole, I love you more than anything and you and everyone in this school knows it. But just because I want to be with you, doesn't mean that we can just because we're talking and trying to work things out between us." She lay her hand against his face. "I love you so much, and I miss you so much that it hurts, but even you have to admit that we have miles of things that we have to work through."

Pouting, he said, "What am I supposed to do until then? What about Valentine's Day? I want to be with you, Phoebe. Why can't we be together while we're working things out?"

Phoebe was in danger of letting tears fall and throwing caution to the wind... but there was so much more at stake than her heart.

"I would like to be with you on Valentine's Day, Cole," she said softly. "But... beyond that? I don't know if I can be in a relationship where I will always come second place to the wishes of a psychopatic killer."
