Rediscovery

Being a vampire and having an energetic puppy meant that you did a lot of walking indoors in order to make sure the puppy got its exercise.

Fortunately the school was more than big to satisfy, and that was even without including the basement since Angel had a gut instinct that Sean and Sunshine wouldn't get along (assuming Sunshine was still down there, and Angel wasn't going to be the one to check.)

This morning found Angel and a still Santa-hatted Sean wandering around the admin areas. Not really awake yet, Angel let Sean lead. The puppy snuffled his way through one hallway and another until he finally came up to a door that was in what appeared to be a much neglected corridor.

Normally Angel wouldn't have cared, but something on the door caught his eye.

"'Assistants Lounge'?" he read aloud. He frowned. "I didn't know we had an assistants' lounge."

He tested the door. The knob felt rusted, but it opened when he applied a little pressure ~~or possibly it was locked and he just had vamp strength to open it, la la la~~.

The room was dark, but Angel could make out a table, some chairs, and a faded couch. He could also make out a very strong sent of mold, mildew, and dust.

Sean, for his part, thought this was fascinating. He darted into the room, leapt onto the couch, and immediately set off a dust cloud strong enough that it billowed out into the hall. Sean barked, pleased with his accomplishment.

"Oh yeah," Angel said. "That can't be good."

He decided to investigate.

"See, this is exactly what I'm saying!" Angel nodded his agreement. "How can it be right for them to expect me to do things that hurt people when the soul makes me want to help them? The whole curse makes no sense."

"The desire for revenge and rational thinking aren't exactly bosom buddies," Callisto said without a trace of irony.

"I get that," Angel said. "Still, seems to me that in that case they don't get a vote. Not to be rude or anything, but there's a lot of people who I've done wrong to. I'm not really seeing how tilting everything I do in favor of what gypsies will or won't like is going to be useful to anybody."

"Then don't, if it interferes that badly with redressing wrongs done. The greater good and all that jazz," Callisto shrugged. "Unless of course you decide to take Psych nest term, then what gypsies will and won't like will be a little more important."

Angel snickered. Then he looked at Callisto more seriously. "You're really okay for all this? For what people might say if they see you trying to make me happy? And for what it might mean if the curse doesn't break while we're together?"

"I never was one to care what people might say about me, and as for the other," Callisto smiled ruefully. "I'm sure I'll be to survive the blow to my ego."

"You sure?" Angel asked. "Because there are plenty of guys at this school who don't come with baggage like I do."

Angel thought about it. "Not, you know, that I can think of their names offhand, but they're bound to exist. Maybe we could flip through a yearbook or something?"

"Angel, if I wanted a guy without baggage we wouldn't be having this conversation, I'd be dragging Bridge off into the nearest storage closet."

"Yeah, he is pretty cute," Angel cocked his head to the side as though he was thinking about it now.

"And sweet, and funny, and completely brood-free," Callisto ticked off points on her fingers. "But you'll notice no closet shegnaigans going on."

"So you like guys with issues, is what you're saying." Angel hooked his thumbs into his pockets. "Or is it height? Because I've got that too."

"Or maybe I just happen to like you?" Callisto raised an eyebrow.

There was a brief look of happiness in Angel's eyes, but then he tried to hide it behind an obviously false mask of not caring.

"Weirdo."

Callisto looked offended. Really she did.

"Freak."

"Hey, I'm not the one with the fetish for broody souled vampires with gypsy issues," Angel pointed out. "Having a thing for hot strong women who know how to handle weapons is perfectly normal."

Angel glanced at the sink. "Okay, maybe the pyromania adds a twist."

"You forgot the doofiness," Callisto grinned. "And flattery isn't going to get you anywhere."

"Don't be silly. I don't think you're doofy at all."

"I'm not the one who's doofy. You are." Callisto mock-glared and poked at Angel. "Completely and utterly even."

"Oh, well then you are a weirdo," Angel said. He rocked back on his heels as though Callisto had poked him harder than she did. "I could've spotted you the brooding, souled, gypsy thing but doofy? Man. I wouldn't tell anybody about that if I were you."

He might have been grinning. But Angel doesn't grin so clearly that was a trick of the light.

"Don't tell anyone I like the doofiness? But it's endearing," Callisto pouted, not that she sounded very put out. "I think you just want to protect your reputation. That whole dark, broody avenger thing would be ruined if people knew how much of a doof you are."

"Eh, there's always the part where I can kick their ass," Angel said. "I think I can recover."

He might have been looking at her a little shyly. "So what's next?"

"Good, because the very next newpaper headline? 'Angel is a big doof.'" Callisto's tone suggested she was only kidding. Probably.

"I'm not sure," She might have sounded a little lost. "This isn't exactly familar territory for me."

Angel nodded. "Same here. Last girl I was with was Buffy, and clearly that's not an example we want to follow." Realizing how that sounded, he added, "You know, 'cause of the turning evil part."

He thought about it some more. "Take it slow? Figure it out as we go?"

"Yeah, you turning evil again would kinda suck. Since we'd probably have to kill you and all," Callisto nodded. "Figuring things out slow, that sounds like it could work."

"Plus if you killed me that'd just add to the cleaning that needs to be done," Angel said, indicating the room around them. "So lose/lose really."

He gave her a small smile. "I like slow. Slow works for me."
