Assistants' Lounge 1/11

Thursday morning before first period, Walter opened the TA's lounge and had to blow dust off the coffee maker before he could get some going. It seemed that no one had been in here in months.

Well, he couldn't really point fingers. He'd had a key since September and hadn't abused it. But he was now.

There was coffee and he decided he'd have his lunch there today as well.

She'd probably make such a cute chinchilla he might aww in public. How embarrassing.

"That's true. Although it might be some sort of wrong if you turned into a chinchilla and I turned into a squirrel at the same time. Is that 'the love that dare not speak its name?'"

"We'd have to get Pippi and Pip to make sure we didn't get too . . . friendly, if that happened."

That? Was a mental image he wasn't sure he'd ever be able to fully shake. ~~At least it wasn't notafruitbat.~~

"And that Furrball and Pup don't try to eat us."

"Well, if we're anything like Pip was when he was a gosling, we'd be able to take Furrball and Pup."

"Pup hasn't been able to get Mr. Neilson yet," Walter agreed. "And it's not for lack of trying.

"Do chinchillas climb?"

"They jump. Rather high. They can probably climb, too."

Now there was a little fuzzy creature with Nadia's face jumping up and down in his head.

Beautiful.

"That almost makes me wish Miss Skeeter were around."

"Oh no, you don't get to turn me into a chinchilla on purpose! Not unless you're a chinchilla, too."

A chinchilla in a waistcoat joined the Nadia chinchilla in his head.

"Would I do something like that?"

"Oh, you might. Just to see me all cute and furry."

"The things you must think of me," Walter said mock-reproachfully. "To think you'd expect that I might want to see my girlfriend transformed into a little furry animal that jumps quite high and, so I've heard, dispenses rum."

Nadia considered this. "Now that would be interesting. If I could turn into the rum chinchilla,"

"We'd have to keep you away from the pirates. I could be your heroic rescuer protecting you from the privateers who were out to steal your rum away from you."

And then, he could turn her back into Nadia with a kiss... No. Wait. That meant kissing a rodent.

And then, he could turn her back into Nadia with a drink with an umbrella in it. Much better.

"But, if the pirates got me, I could be a pirate chinchilla. With a little pirate sword and a little pirate hat. I'd be the best pirate chinchilla, ever."

Walter nodded. Of course she would. "You'd be the terror of the seven seas. But then you run the risk of losing a body part. It's a pirate thing. A hand, a leg, maybe an eye."

Nadia wrinkled her nose. "That wouldn't be any fun. But Pippi's a pirate, and she has all her body parts."

"Yes, but Pippi's Pippi." Which said it all.

"That's true. Is Barbosa missing anything?"

"Other than his mind? Not that I noticed." The mind was a pretty big something to be missing.

Nadia laughed. "Yeah, but enough rum will do that to anyone."

"Would being the rum chinchilla make you immune to that? Or would it speed things along?"

"Oh, definitely an immunity."

"You know, after all this talk about it, we've probably jinxed one or both of us into being chinchillas one of these days."

"We should knock on something wooden. To get rid of the irony fairy."
