Assistants' Lounge, Thursday 1/26

The roof was too bright and visible during the day, and the attic reminded Bel too much of Phoebe, so he retreated to the lounge to spend the day brooding. And quite possibly, plot the ways he was going to make Logan Echolls suffer.

Angel's eyes narrowed. "What do you have planned?"

"You'll just have to wait and see, won't you?" Bel said. "But in the meantime, I'm sure I can find ways to amuse myself."

"You know they say you'll go blind if you do that too often."

"And you would know," Bel said. "Tell me, do you always think of me, or do you sometimes let Callisto join in?"

"For killing you? I just might," Angel said. "You're racking up quite a list of people who want to see you dead and tortured. I'd ask if this was some kind of extroverted suicide, but you know, somehow I just can't seem to care."

"Then why don't you get to it?" Bel asked. "Or are you all talk, no action? What's it going to take to get you to actually make a move instead of trying to talk me to death?"

Angel moved to shove Bel up against the wall ~~because honestly this scene hasn't been slashy enough and clearly we need to fix that~~ "Oh make no mistake. I start on you, you'll know it. You tried to kill me! Twice! Did you think I was going to let that go?"

Bel grinned as Angel pushed him against the wall. "Show me what you've got," he said. "Show me what you're made of. I've been dying to see if you've got Angelus as tightly controlled as you seem to think. Why don't you let him out to play?"

"This what you've sunk to now?" Angel asked. "Spells didn't work so you're going to ask Angelus to come back by saying 'pretty please'?"

"Worth a shot." Bel shrugged, still grinning. "But next time won't be a spell. Already learned my lesson there. I've got something else in mind, and trust me, you won't see it coming. You can't stop me, and you know it, that's why you're trying -- and failing -- to intimidate me."

"Sorry, was there a threat in there?" Angel asked. "I zoned out when I realized you've played this record before. Tell you what, though? You try hurting me again, you try hurting my friends again, just watch how awake I get. Should be fun."

"Promises, promises," Bel said. "I keep waiting for you to do something, and I keep being disappointed. As for your friends, well, Echolls is going to pay for what he did, and there's nothing you can do about it."

Angel shoved Bel hard. "So help me if you even think about hurting Logan - "

Bel's head hit the wall hard but he didn't lose his smirk. "Thinking about it right now," he said. "Thinking about starting with something like this."

He'd seen how Angel was moving, as if favoring a rib injury. He'd had the same injury recently so he recognized it in someone else. Clenching his fist, he punched Angel hard in the ribs.

Angel grunted in pain, falling back a step. Damn trying to do posturing when he was still recovering from Dru!

He had to stop Bel, though. Threats to Angel were one thing. But threats to the innocent?

Unfortunately Angel had only one weapon that stood a chance of working.

"Logan's mine," he snarled. He stood up, clamping down hard on the pain so he could face Bel unblinking. "I told you that. Angelus told you that. If you think you can lay a hand on him and will get rewarded if you ever manage to snatch the soul away, think again, boy."

Bel paled for a moment, considering. Angelus might be pissed when he brought him back unless he still had Logan to play with. Probably best not to risk that anger.

But he smiled. "Angelus," he said slyly. "Nice to see you again."

"Right now I'd be more concerned about breathing again," Angel said. "You do not touch Logan. You do not touch Logan's friends. You do not so much as make Logan frown. He's mine. He's always been mine. Am I making myself perfectly clear here?"

"What about me?" Bel said. "What if they try to kill me? I'm not going to lay down and die. Your boy shot me. Next time he may try something more hardcore."

"Get a copy of How to Win Friends and Influence People," Angel said. "You piss 'em off I'm not going to protect you."

Angel pushed away from Bel. He wanted nothing more than to be gone. Still, he had to try to get the last word in. "Stay out of my way. Stay out of theirs. Do that, and we'll be bestest buds."

"Oh, I'm sure we will," Bel sarcastically. He stepped close to Angel again, invading his personal space. "Just tell me one thing. How deep did you have to go to pull that little threat out? Or is Angelus really lurking that close to the surface that you can channel him so easily?"

"Wouldn't you love to know?" Angel replied. He gave Bel a mocking salute, then left the room.

Outside in the hallway, where no one could see, Angel mouthed Damn it and slammed his fist into the wall.

The wall was concrete and stone. It took his single punch easily. Angel's hand, however, did not. Angel stared for a moment at the blood that welled up. He sighed, bandaged himself up with a hankerchef, and went off to his next class.

Bel heard the slam of Angel's fist into the wall and smiled smugly to himself, pleased with how he'd gotten under Angel's skin.
