Phoebe was aware of him being so near, and she was strangely comforted by this. However, with the way things were between them...

"If I'm bothering your studying I can go see if I crash in Piper's room," she suggested softly.

[[OOC: *dies liek whoa. That's too funny.]]

"No, that's okay," Cole said. "You can stay."

"Thank you. I'm just... really tired."

"Lana's here for you," Cole said, then returned to his book, pretending not to listen to the conversation that followed.

Phoebe opened her eyes and looked to the door.

"Phoebe..." Lana says quietly, but with a strange tone to her voice. "Can I talk to you? Something... happened this morning."

Phoebe sits up, concern on her afce. "Lana, what's wrong?"

"Something's happened to me. I woke up this morning and... Well, God, this is kind of embarrassing." She certainly looks upset and embarrassed. "It was... I first noticed.. well, it kind of happened when I brushed my teeth, I guess, but mostly it was when I kissed Shep..."

Phoebe stands up quickly and then leans against the couch for a moment. After regaining her balance she goes to Lana and takes her hand, pulling her to the couch. "What happened, Lana?"

Who do I have to kill?

Lana glances over at Bel, but decides it's okay if he hears.

"Okay..." she takes a deep breath. "When I kissed Shep this morning it was like there was this *ping* in my head and something went 'Shep'. Which I didn't think too much of, 'cause, you know, he *is* Shep. But then it was like I became super aware - like another kind of *ping* - of what toothpaste and mouthwash he'd used. And while I was thinking about that it was like I could tell the chemical composition of all of it."

She's flushed and clearly upset about the whole thing. "And I kind of freaked a bit. And when I went to try and settle down - have some fruit and yogurt for breakfast... the same thing happened. That same little *ping* and knowing *everything* about what I'd tasted.

Phoebe blinks and then blinks again.

"You say this started this morning?"

It sounded like Lana had developed a weird sort of offshoot of chemical empathy or something.

There might have been flailing.

"Yes," Lana said a little nervously. "Just this morning. And you know, the weird thing is I have this feeling that I could identify pretty much anything just by tasting it. Like, not just foods or whatever, but... *anything*."

She hesitates. "I'm afraid that maybe it's related to the meteor rocks from home, that I'm mutating. And most of the mutants... well, they become sort of evil."

"Lana, there's not the capacity for evil in you," she soothes her friend. "How long ago were you last in contact with these rocks?"

"When I was home over break and got thrown by my horse. I landed on some of them." She's clearly getting more and more agitated, but trying to stay calm.

"The thing is Phoebe, we think it's something about the rocks that make people... bad. So if this is caused by them..."

Phoebe hugs her. "Somehow, I don't think that's what's going on here. I have heard of weirdness happening to other students yesterday."

"Really?" Lana looks incredibly relieved. "What... God, I wonder what's happened to me. To us?"

Now that she's less concerned that she's turning into a meteor mutant, she's curious. "I wonder how much I can do with this..."

Phoebe grins. "Now you sound like me."

She bites her lip, knowing the niether Lana nor Cole are going to like what she's about to say.

"Kiki and I plan to use my Spirit board to find some answers to some things tonight. I'll see if we can find out about this..."

"Phoebe... I don't know how good an idea that is..." Lana looks concerned again.

Phoebe nods. "It probably isn't, but the attacks... the weirdness... I can't talk to certain people... so this is the only other way we can think of. I promise I'll cast a protective circle."

She drops her voice to a soft whisper. "I can't ask Cole for help, and I don't think I should ask Crowley because it'll cause more trouble and he'll get angry at me again." She bites her lip. "Besides, some of the answers I'm seeking? They're not for me.'

Lana sighs in resignation. "Is there anything I can do to help?"

Phoebe's voice got softer. "You won't like it."

Lana sighs again. "Tell me."

"If anything happens? Keep an eye on him for me?"

"Phoebe..." Lana looks over at Bel, then back to Phoebe. "You know I would, but... God, Phoebe. This just doesn't seem like a good idea."

Phoebe nods. "I know, Lana. But... you know what happened last time I started making plans..." She looks down. "I don't expect anything bad to happen ~~as long as Crowley doesn't find out~~, but I'd feel better knowing that someone was keeping an eye on Cole for me while I was doing this." She swallows. "He still loves me and if he thinks I'm in trouble..."
